Mrs. Derkman is giving only one student an opportunity to bring home Speedy, the class hamster, for the weekend and take care of it. Both Suzanne and Jeremy want to do it and Katie is unfortunately caught in the middle of their argument. She loves them both and hates having to choose sides. So she goes to the bathroom to collect her thoughts when, all of a sudden, a magical wind arrives and blows against her. Before she knows what hit her, Katie finds herself in the school cafeteria. When she accidentally tosses some egg salad on top of George's tray, the ultimate food fight begins. Kids are throwing food everywhere and the cafeteria is a complete mess. Katie eventually becomes herself again but learns that Lucille has been fired for causing the food fight. Needless to say, Katie feels tremendously guilty --- she must think of a way to get Lucille's job back. But can she do it? And, if so, how?

The girls feel the same way about the boys, except for Katie, who wants the boys and the girls to like one another.

Once again, the magical wind arrives; this time, it turns Katie into Jeremy! Katie believes this is the perfect opportunity to try to fix things between them, but her plan backfires and the division between the boys and the girls is deeper than ever. Then, something happens to one of Katie's dear friends that may help the boys and girls reunite.

Suzanne is beyond embarrassed when the entire class finds out that she's wearing flowery underpants. So, she picks up the microphone and announces to the entire school that there are now no more rules. Chaos results, with kids running all through the building, stuffing their faces with food, and even getting hurt. After Katie changes back into herself, a much stricter principal replaces Mr. Kane. Katie feels terribly about the entire situation and must convince the school board to keep Mr. Kane.
